It also numbers the footnote so that it can be matched easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that we did not leave any space between the text and the footnote command in the code above. This is because footnotes in LaTeX would process the space and compile it with an unintended format, so it is best to leave it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"custom-numbering-your-footnotes\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Custom_Numbering_Your_Footnotes\"><\/span>Custom Numbering Your Footnotes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the above example we can see that footnotes in LaTeX are numbered automatically. However, it is possible to use your own numbering as demonstrated in the following example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is an example of a custom number for your\\footnote[10]{custom numbered footnote} LaTeX footnotes. Here is another footnote\\footnotemark that is automatically numbered.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\\footnotetext{Second footnote}&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When compiled, the output resembles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/MfXCuwJq1BD67YbfW9fGwivEWtkHn_pbB1HT01ZhGk0A93W7WgqlRlbyj9aAOQdivrWq35Tn9iXmBf5rSsQ62OqgWlZUQgGQp3tjJI0SkwFSv8SEe34FQT_S0BW7QGohAZyzg-oD\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the above example, we used the code <em>\\footnote[10]{custom numbered footnote}<\/em> to set the footnote number as \u201c10\u201d along with the footnote text \u201ccustom numbered footnote\u201d. Such a command isn\u2019t usually necessary as LaTeX automatically takes care of numbering footnotes. It should only be used in rare cases where you absolutely must represent a footnote number out of order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also used the command <em>\\footnotemark<\/em> to denote the position of footnotes in LaTeX, but without the footnote text itself. This is useful for adding the footnote text in a later line. We accomplished this with the command \\footnotetext{Second footnote}.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"adding-footnotes-with-multiple-references\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adding_Footnotes_with_Multiple_References\"><\/span>Adding Footnotes with Multiple References<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also possible to add footnotes in LaTeX that are referenced multiple times in the text. This can be useful when you want to call-back to a particular footnote at different points in your text. We demonstrate this in the following example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This example demonstrates how you can reference a footnote\\footnote{this is the first footnote} multiple times in LaTeX. You can do this using the command <em>\\renewcommand{\\thefootnote}{\\roman{footnote}}<\/em> where <em>roman<\/em> can be swapped out with other footnote types. These footnote styles and their corresponding codes are shown below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>arabic: For footnotes in arabic numerals.<\/li><li>Roman: For footnotes in upper case Roman numerals.<\/li><li>alph: For footnotes in lower case alphabets.<\/li><li>Alph: For footnotes in upper case alphabets.<\/li><li>fnsymbol: For adding footnotes using a set of nine symbols.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of converting footnotes into roman numerals is shown below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This example demonstrates how you can reference a footnote\\footnote{this is the first footnote} multiple times in LaTeX.
