But, what is a tilde? For example<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-syntaxhighlighter-code \"><pre class=\"brush: plain; title: ; notranslate\" title=\"\">\n\\documentclass{article}\n\\begin{document}\n$$ \\widetilde{abc} $$\n\\end{document}\n<\/pre><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"176\" height=\"123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scijournal.org\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image1-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2732\"\/><figcaption>wide tilde command output<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Both methods are limited to letters, but there is one method available to write the tilde when referring to mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tilde_in_Math_Mode\"><\/span><strong>Tilde in Math Mode<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tilde in math has many variations, either alone or together with another symbol, so depending on which one you will need you have to define it luckily all of them are built-in in LaTeX.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principal command is \\<strong>sim<\/strong> for the plain <strong>~<\/strong> symbol, it does require the math mode. Math-mode $\/sim$ and \/texttildelow (from the textcomp package) are options for producing a lower tilde (while \/*{} and \/textasciitilde produce a raised tilde in text-mode).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important that you familiarize yourself with the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List. Although the link seems to keep changing, the command texdoc symbols-a4 will display the local copy if you have a complete TeX Live installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\\textbackslash and \\textasciitilde
